Wireless link vs. trenching new cable
| What matters | Wireless point-to-point | Trenched cable |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Radios mounted at each end | Digging and restoring pavement or landscaping |
| Disruption | Little to no disruption to the site | Torn-up lots, lawns, or roads during the work |
| Main cost driver | Equipment at each end of the link | Length and difficulty of the trench |
| Requirements | A clear line of sight between radios | A path to dig and permission to dig it |
| Changes later | Radios can be moved or added | New trenches for new locations |

Frequently asked questions
How does a wireless point-to-point camera link work?
Two radios create a dedicated wireless connection between locations. Cameras at the remote site connect to one radio, which sends the video to a matching radio at your main building. From there, the video joins your network and recorder, so the remote cameras work like any other camera on your system.
How far can a wireless link reach?
It depends on the radios and the path between them. Short links between buildings on a campus are common, and much longer links are possible with the right equipment and a clear line of sight. We measure the distance and check the path during the site survey.
Do the radios need a clear line of sight?
Yes, for a reliable link. Trees, buildings, and hills between the radios can block or weaken the signal. If there’s no direct path, we can often mount the radios higher or route the link through another point that can see both ends.
Does weather affect the video?
Commercial point-to-point radios are built for outdoor use and designed to keep working through normal rain, snow, and wind. Heavy weather can reduce performance on very long links, so we size each link with extra margin for your local conditions.
Is a wireless camera link secure?
Yes. A point-to-point link is a dedicated connection between your own radios, not a shared Wi-Fi network, and it can be encrypted so video stays private. We configure the security settings when the link is installed and test it before handoff.
How many cameras can one link support?
One link can carry multiple cameras. The number depends on the link’s capacity and the resolution and frame rate of each camera. We size the link for the cameras you have today and leave room for the ones you may add later.
Is wireless cheaper than running cable?
Often, especially over long distances or when cable would have to cross pavement, roads, or landscaping. Trenching costs grow with distance and difficulty, while a wireless link mostly depends on the equipment at each end. When both are possible, we compare them in your quote.
Can I view the remote cameras from my phone?
Yes. Once the video reaches your network, remote cameras work like the rest of your system, so you can watch live or recorded video from your phone, tablet, or computer, wherever you are. You can also add those cameras to live video monitoring, so agents watch the far corners of your property too.
How much does a wireless point-to-point system cost?
It depends on the distance, the path between locations, the number of cameras, and the mounting required. We price every project after a free site survey and send a written quote with options, so you can compare wireless and cabled approaches.
